Prakash Javadekar, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (independent charge), on Friday said that the NDA government at the Centre had not sought the resignation of governors appointed by the previous UPA government.

Speaking with reporters at Aluva near Kochi, the minister said the Union government would follow the Constitution but the governors should “follow their conscience” and take a call on continuing in office in the backdrop of the Lok Sabha election results.

Javadekar recalled that he had resigned as deputy chairman from the Maharashtra Planning Commission “within an hour” of the BJP losing the election. “When the people have given a mandate, I must respect that mandate… that’s my commitment to democratic principles,” he said.
