A video of a stray dog running behind an SUV for reportedly two kilometers in Faridabad, Haryana, quickly went viral, triggering an outpouring of compassion online. Initially shared by animal lover Vidit Sharma, the founder of an animal welfare trust, the video was captioned with a claim that the dog had been heartlessly abandoned by the pet owner.
"Heartbreaking," Sharma wrote on X. "A dog was abandoned today in front of QRG Hospital, Faridabad. The car number is HR51 CF 2308. This is blatant animal cruelty, and the dog is at risk of traffic accidents or attacks from other dogs," the post read further.
The video, which was widely shared, struck a chord with animal lovers. Many expressed outrage over what they believed to be an act of neglect.
"That is truly heartbreaking," one user commented, while another added, "Abandoning a helpless dog like that shows a complete lack of compassion."
However, Sharma later clarified that he was mistaken and the dog was not abandoned.
On Sunday, he stated that the animal wasn't an abandoned pet but a stray dog that regularly follows the family who feeds it.
In the video, the dog is seen running behind the car with immense energy. The visuals actually displayed the animal's love, loyalty and attachment to the family that fed it regularly.
Despite the clarification, the video continues to do rounds on the internet, with many highlighting the bond between dogs and humans.
