The southwest monsoon gathered momentum in Kerala on Thursday, covering most parts of the state’s northern districts.
Turbulent seas continued to spell concern for residents of coastal areas in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Weathermen have also predicted strong onshore winds and extended their warning to fishermen.
Nine stations in the state recorded heavy rainfall on Thursday, according to the Meteorological Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. Ponnani in Malappuram district recorded the heaviest rainfall of the day, at 11 cm.
Taliparamba in Kannur (10 cm), Hosdurg in Kasaragod, Cheruthazham in Kannur and Enamackel in Thrissur (9 cm each), Vadakara in Kozhikode (8 cm) also received heavy rainfall on Thursday. The Met centre has predicted heavy rainfall in the state till Saturday.
The southwest monsoon had hit Kerala on June 6, a day after its forecast date of onset. Till Wednesday, the state had received 28 per cent less rainfall than normal.
Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed on Thursday informed the state legislative assembly that with more rainfall, the government would be able to withdraw the ongoing scheduled power shutdowns by the end of June. On Wednesday, the 45-minute shutdown was extended to an hour.
