High Court to monitor Miss Kerala pageant

The court on Tuesday set up a panel of lawyers to examine the contest and determine whether there is any substance in a complaint of indecency filed against the event. It was P K Ibrahim, a lawyer and national council member of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties who moved the court alleging that minor girls were paraded in skimpy attire at the pageant.

He argued that the contest violated the country’s strict laws against immoral trafficking and crimes against minor girls as well as decency in public. The authorities should invoke the IPC and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention Act) to ban the event as “such shows including modelling involve sexual exploitation”, he said.
