Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee broke her silence on Monday about the ongoing investigation into the irregularities in recruitment to state-aided schools. Party veteran, and state cabinet minister Partha Chatterjee was recently arrested in connection with the case.
Mamata said that anyone found guilty would be punished. She also expressed her unhappiness that her name was being drawn into the controversy. “CPI(M) and BJP are dragging my name through the mud, and I will never accept it,” a party press release stated, quoting the West Bengal chief minister.
Speaking at a civilian awards’ ceremony here, Banerjee said she doesn’t support corruption and asserted that Trinamool Congress will not spare anyone found guilty. Refraining from commenting on the sub-judice case, Banerjee said, "The investigation should be allowed to go on in a time-bound manner, and if someone is found guilty, then that person will be punished accordingly."
Banerjee said that she didn’t join politics for a better living. “I believe politics is about sacrifice, politics is about serving the country. Throughout my life, I have been against corruption,” she said, adding that she worked hard and earned money by writing books and composing music through royalties.
The chief minister also said that a fast-track court should look into the matter. She also clarified that Trinamool had no connections with the person (Arpita Mukherjee) from whose residence money was recovered by the Enforcement Directorate.
