Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday evening attended a meeting of the Vidarbha unit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) here, sources said. The meeting assumed significance in view of the assembly elections in Maharashtra, due in October. The Union Cabinet on Friday asserted that there was no provision for a creamy layer in the reservation for SCs and STs in the Constitution given by B R Ambedkar.
The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held a detailed discussion on the Supreme Court judgement on the sub-categorisation of reservation for SCs and STs as granted in the Constitution.

The BJP on Friday alleged that the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government, by hiking the tax on diesel by Rs 7 per litre, put a burden of Rs 2,500 crore on the people.
The government has curtailed free travel facilities earlier granted to police, withdrawn fare concession in HRTC buses to women, and is charging extra money for luggage, BJP leader Rajeev Bindal said.

PM Modi undertook an aerial survey in Wayanad before physically visiting the location of the disaster. In the aerial survey, he saw the origin of the landslide, which is in the origin of Iruvazhinji Puzha (River). He also observed the worst affected areas of Punchirimattam, Mundakkai and Chooralmala.

He said he heard from the survivors what they witnessed and experienced and termed the landslides as nature displaying its "furious form".
After PM Modi's return, state Public Works Minister P A Mohammed Riyas told reporters that on behalf of the state government, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stressed the need for a comprehensive reconstruction of the landslides-hit areas.
"We have submitted all our demands before the Prime Minister including the need for Rs 2,000 crore for the rehabilitation process alone. We have also incurred various losses on the account of the agriculture sector, loss of livelihood among others," Rajan said.
SC/ST Department minister O R Kelu said the Prime Minister has spent more time than scheduled in the region understanding the magnitude of the disaster and has asked the government to submit a memorandum in connection with the losses incurred.
"He has also suggested that we conduct a study to ascertain the reason behind the disaster. We feel that he will positevely consider our demands," Kelu said. (PTI)
"As far as I am concerned, I think that better late than never is the best I can say," Tharoor told reporters responding to a question on Modi's visit to Kerala's Wayanad.
"But honestly, it would have been good if he had gone earlier and seen the conditions on the ground as some of us have done. I was there last week, it was a very emotionally searing experience, otherwise serious calamity," Tharoor added.
