Dhankhar's comments on judiciary: Cong cites Naidu's 2020 remarks that Constitution is supreme

Vscalating its attack over Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's comments on the judiciary, the Congress on Friday cited his predecessor M Venkaiah Naidu's remarks in 2020 in which he had stated that none of the three organs of the state can claim to be supreme as only the Constitution is supreme.

Dhankhar on Wednesday had said "one-upmanship and public posturing" from judicial platforms is not good and these institutions must know how to conduct themselves.

Stepping up the party's attack over the issue, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh tweeted, "Mr. Chidambaram has pointedly countered the Vice President's assault on the judiciary by saying the Constitution and not Parliament is supreme. Just a year ago, Mr. Dhankar's predecessor Venkaiah Naidu-garu had said exactly what Mr. Chidambaram has." - PTI.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday expressed sadness over the passing away of veteran politician Sharad Yadav and said he was a popular leader and an astute administrator who set high benchmarks in public life.

"Saddened by the untimely passing away of former Union Minister and veteran parliamentarian Sharad Yadav Ji. A popular leader and an astute administrator, he set high benchmarks in public life," Vice President Dhankhar said in a tweet.

Situation under control in Buxar's Chausa: Bihar CM

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said the situation in Chausa in Buxar district, where a violent clash had taken place between farmers and police, was "under control".

Ten policemen were injured when around 1,000 villagers, including farmers, attacked the under-construction Chausa thermal power plant and torched around half-a-dozen vehicles on Wednesday, hours after police allegedly beat up locals during a raid, an officer said.

The law enforcers lobbed tear gas shells and fired in the air to control the mob.

Interacting with reporters during his 'Samadhan Yatra' in Darbhanga district on Thursday, Kumar, said, "I have spoken to the district magistrate of Buxar and things are under control." - PTI.
