Congress leaders should follow Tharoor: BJP

The BJP on Wednesday projected Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's praise of the government's handling of the Russia-Ukraine war as an endorsement of India's deft diplomacy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

Former Union minister and Lok Sabha MP Ravi Shankar Prasad described Tharoor's acknowledgement that he has been proved incorrect in his early criticism of the government for not speaking out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a case of "better late then never."

Prasad told reporters that the Modi government takes decisions that are good for India. "The way Shashi Tharoor has accepted it, if other Congress leaders would also acknowledge it, then it will be good," he said. (PTI)

In a stern warning to perpetrators of Nagpur violence, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said attackers of police will be "dug out from their graves" and made to face the law. His reaction comes amid outrage over rioters allegedly touching a woman constable inappropriately and trying to disrobe her during violence on Monday night. The mob had hurled stones and petrol bombs, injuring 33 police personnel, including three DCP-rank officers.

"Those who attacked police during the arson in Nagpur will be dug out from their graves. Attacks on police are unpardonable. They will get the strictest punishment. We won't spare them," Fadnavis said in the Assembly while replying to a debate on the Budgetary demands of the Home department. (PTI)

India Politics Live | 'Congress harboured mining mafia in Rajasthan,' claims BJP minister

Rajasthan Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara on Wednesday accused Congress leaders of spreading false information about illegal sand mining. The previous state government run by Congress was responsible for allowing illegal mining and flourishing of mining mafia in Rajasthan, Godara said at a press conference.

He also highlighted steps taken by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma's government to clamp down on the mining mafia.

He claimed that the government has been technology to tighten control over illegal mining activities and has filed several times more cases than the Congress government, seizing vehicles and sand.

In 2023, during Congress' tenure, only 1,846 cases of illegal sand mining were registered, while the number rose to 2,514 in 2024, he said.

"In 2023, 2,360 individuals were arrested for illegal sand mining, while the BJP government arrested 3,583 people in 2024.

"In 2023, 24,456 tons of illegal sand were seized, but in just one year, the current government seized 94,952 tons of illegal sand," Godara said.

The minister's remarks came in the wake of a verbal skirmish earlier in the day over illegal mining in the state Assembly, ending in Congress' walkout from the house. (PTI)
