Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar on Thursday asserted that the extradition of Tahawwur Rana – key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks – from the US is a ploy by the BJP to "divert" attention of the public from the “failure” of the central government to fulfill its promises.

Kumar also rejected the claim by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the extradition of Rana was a major "diplomatic success" for the Narendra Modi-led government.

Rana, 64, is a close associate of David Coleman Headley, also known as Daood Gilani and one of the main conspirators in the 2008 attacks.

"Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Anil Jaihind (Anil Kumar Yadav) as the chairman of the AICC's OBC department with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing chairman, Captain Ajay Singh Yadav (retd)," the Congress said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on April 11, where he will address a public gathering and inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for 44 projects worth Rs 3,880 crore.

Varanasi Divisional Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma said among the projects to be inaugurated are schemes focused on rural development, including 130 drinking water projects, 100 new Anganwadi centres, 356 libraries, a polytechnic college in Pindra, and a government degree college.

The prime minister will also inaugurate a transit hostel at the Police Lines and police barracks in Ramnagar and four rural roads, he said.

Focusing on urban development, Modi will inaugurate projects at Shastri Ghat and Samne Ghat, along with various beautification projects carried out by the Railways and the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA).

Eight of the 14 pending reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) pertaining to the performance of Delhi government's excise department, health department, DTC, public accounts and appropriation accounts were tabled in the Assembly recently.

Except for the performance report on the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) that was sent for examination by the committee on government undertakings, the remaining are to be examined by the PAC, officials said.

BJP legislator from Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli constituency, Nainar Nagendran, filed his nomination papers to contest the party's state president’s election on Friday.
