2 killed, 17 injured after sheds collapse in Sonipat market due to storm, rains

Two people were killed and 17 others injured after two sheds in a market in Haryana's Sonipat collapsed due to a storm and heavy rains on Thursday, police said. The incident took place at the new vegetable market in Sonipat's Gohana. Heavy earthmoving machinery was pressed into service and several of those trapped under the sheds were rescued, they said. Dramatic scenes of rescue during heavy rains in Telangana

The incessantrainsand inundation of a number of residential localities in Telangana threw up dramatic visuals of people being saved from flood-waters on Thursday. In a scene reminiscent of the film 'Baahubali', TV channels showed a viral video of an infant being carried in a plastic tub on the head of a man in neck-deep water at Manthani town. Heavy rain, massive winds wreak havoc in northern Kerala

Incessantrainsand unprecedented winds have wreaked havoc in northern Kerala in the last few days with rivers overflowing in parts of Kasaragod, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts necessitating shifting of people to shelters. As many as 427 people, including two pregnant women, seven children and one differently-abled person, have been shifted to eight rehabilitation camps opened in Wayanad district, official sources said. Over 3,000 people shifted to safety amid heavy rains in Gadchiroli

Over 3,000 people from 29 villages in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district have been shifted to safety as a precaution due to incessant rainfall in the region, an official said on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the district for the day, with a forecast of heavy to moderate showers in various parts, he said.

Following a massive landslide near Yettinahole, Shirady Ghats was closed for traffic from Thursday afternoon. This is the second landslide to take place within a fortnight. The stretch in Shirady ghat was opened for light vehicles a few days ago.Vehicles will now have to ply on Charmady route or via Madikeri to Bengaluru.

Rains to continue in K'taka, memorials at UNESCO heritage site Hampi inundated

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted rains for another two days across Karnataka. Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi, that suffered heavy losses due to incessant rains, have been sounded orange alert on Thursday.

Due to heavy rains, the memorials at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have been inundated. The bridge near the Tungabhadra river built during the time of Vijayanagar Kingdom, Purandar Mantap, Vidhi Vidhana Mantap, Rama Lakshmana temple, Chakrathirtha bathing zone, has also been inundated at Hampi.

Shivamogga, Kodagu, Chikkamagalur districts are on orange alert and Hassan district is on yellow alert for another five days. North Karnataka districts of Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri districts are also given the yellow alert.

The Cauvery River which takes birth in Kodagu district has crossed its danger level.

Amarnath Yatra suspended due to bad weather

Amarnath Yatra was suspended on both routes on Thursday due to bad weather as rains lashed the Kashmir Valley, officials said.

The yatra was temporarily suspended from Pahalgam as well as Baltal routes in the morning and no pilgrim was allowed to move towards the holy cave shrine, they said.

The officials said the yatra will resume after the weather improves.

Heavy rainfall in parts of Rajasthan

Heavy rainfall occurred in some parts of Rajasthan with Jhalawar’s Dug area receiving 140 cm rain, officials said on Thursday.

According to the meteorological department, Bungra in Banswara recorded 137 mm rain, while the rainfall gauged in Bagidora, Shergarh, Raipur, Sajjangarh and Sallopat was 98 mm, 93 mm, 91 mm, 80 mm and 79 mm, respectively.

Several other places recorded rainfall below 79 mm during the past 24 hours.

Rain to continue in J&K

Inclement weather continued in Jammu and Kashmir during the last 24 hours as the MeT department said on Thursday that light to moderate rain will occur during the next 24 hours.

"Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places in J&K during the next 24 hours," an official of the MeT department said.

Srinagar recorded 17.3 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 11.7 and Gulmarg 10.6 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature on Thursday.

Woman injured in Thane house collapse after heavy rains

A 50-year-old woman was injured when a portion of her house collapsed in Maharashtra's Thane district after heavy showers on Thursday morning, civic officials said. The incident took place around 5.30 am at a chawl (tenement) in Rashid Compound of Mumbra township, Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell (RDMC) chief Avinash Sawant said.

Gujarat is witnessing heavy rain since the onset of the monsoon season and the rainfall has wreaked havoc in several parts of the state, including Ahmedabad - the city that has not seen such a rainfall in last 20 years. It rained more than 500 mm in a single day here.

People have suffered losses and damages worth in lakhs and crores due to waterlogging and rains, and are either blaming the government or are hoping for some aid from the government.

13 workers stranded in swollen river in Maharashtra

Amid heavy showers, 13 workers were stranded in the swollen Vaitarna river at Bahadoli in Palghar district of Maharashtra on Wednesday and efforts were on to rescue them, an official said. The workers, engaged in construction of the Mumbai-Vadodra Expressway, had entered the river in a barge as part of their work, but got stuck due to the rising water level, said chief of the District Disaster Control Cell Vivekananda Kadam.
