In a shocking incident, an Indian Navy seaman was kidnapped from Chennai and burnt alive in the Palghar district.
The deceased was identified as Suraj Kumar Dube, a 37-year-old, who originally hails from Ranchi in Jharkhand. According to police, he was kept in the jungles of Vaiji-Veljipada in Gholwad.
He was kidnapped by three unidentified men who demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh for his release. However, the victim refused to do so and was burnt.
When locals found him, he was alive with burn injuries and in a semi-nude state and was taken to a local hospital in Dahanu. He was rushed to the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and Sion, where he passed away after giving a dying declaration.
According to Assistant Police Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar, a case has been registered under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 364 (kidnapping and ransom). Further investigations are underway.
Police were trying to secure CCTV footage and CDR.
His body has been sent for post-mortem.
