Lok Sabha suspends Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, was suspended from the House for ‘gross and deliberate misconduct’ pending an investigation by the privileges committee.

Congress MPs on Thursday approached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla alleging that Sansad TV was "discriminating" against them by not showing Opposition speakers when they are speaking.

I.N.D.I.A floor leaders to meet at 10 am to discuss suspension of Adhir Ranjan and strategy in the Rajya Sabha. Congress Lok Sabha MPs will also meet at 10.30 am.

TMC MP Derek O'Brien accused PM Modi of "absconding" from Rajya Sabha for the full Parliament session.

"In Lok Sabha, he spoke on #Manipur for 4 minutes, after being compelled to by Team I.N.D.I.A," he said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Since Independence, no PM has insulted Parliament more than Modi."

On the suspension of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Lok Sabha, Congress Chief Whip in Lok Sabha, K Suresh says, "...He has been the Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha for the last four years. He gave a lot of speeches in the House. They found his misconduct only yesterday. They have done it politically. This killed the Parliamentary democratic system with the suspension...We have a meeting of I.N.D.I.A partners today, and there is also a meeting of Congress MPs. We are going to discuss this issue. We will take this up as per the decision in the two meetings."

Parliament proceedings begin for the day.

Govt proposes to replace IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act with new laws

Union Home Minister Amit Shah speaks on Bharatiya Sanhita Suraksha Bill, 2023 in Lok Sabha. He says, "From 1860 to 2023, the country's criminal justice system functioned as per the laws made by the British. The three laws will be replaced and there will be a major change in the criminal justice system in the country..."

"The three Bills that I am moving today include the principle law for criminal justice system. One is Indian Penal Code which was formed in 1860, second is Criminal Procedure Code which was formed in 1898 and third is Indian Evidence Act, which was formed in 1872. We will end these laws today, which were brought by the British," says Union Home minister Amit Shah.

Rajya Sabha proceedings adjourned till 2 pm amid Opposition uproar over Manipur issue.

The bills seek to revamp the British-era laws and will prioritise laws for crimes against women and children.

"Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 will be established in place the Indian Penal Code, 1860; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha, 2023 will replace the Criminal Procedure Act, 1898; and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 will replace the Indian Evidence Act, 1872. The laws that will be repealed were formed to safeguard and strengthen the British," says AmitShah in Lok Sabha.

Lok Sabha adjourned till 1:30 pm.

Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha suspended from the House

AAP MP Raghav Chadha has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for "gross violation of rules, contemptuous conduct, pending report of privileges committee".

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar says hours have been lost due to "disruptions". "People at large are in pain, our accountability and transparency has now died."

Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die.

"Why have they introduced these bills when the session is about to end? They (government) are anti-democratic," says DMK leader T K S Elangovan on tabling of three bills in Lok Sabha to replace IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia says, "From the past month since when the activities for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Vidhan Saha election started, we are listening to the reference of Ramayana and Mahabharata a lot both in the house and outside the house...But I believe that the people of our country are well aware and they'll only remove their masks."
