The nation may not have legalised euthanasia (mercy killing) for humans but in a first of its kind incident in the state, an elephant was given mercy killing in Jaipur.
The female elephant Sita was down after she broke one of her legs and seeing her pathetic condition the wild life department granted permission for a euthanasia request on Saturday.
According to officials, Sita had fractured her leg for the last two and half months.
The elephant was part of the Elephant Village which is located near the Amber fort here used for ferrying tourists to the fort. However she fell down and broke her leg during one of the sorties.
Sita’s owner Shabir Khan approached the Chief Wild Life Warden of the State Forest department requesting a peaceful death for Sita.
He said the 23 year old elephant was suffering from unbearable pain.
Veterinary doctors Dr Arvind Mathur and Dr Ashok Tanwar of the Nahargarh Animal Rescue Centre examined the elephant's condition. She was administered poisonous medicine died within minutes.
