Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that interview for selecting candidates in low-grade government jobs will soon be abolished. He said his government is working fast in that direction.

Speaking during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme, Modi said: “In my Independence Day address, I had questioned the requirement of interview for lower-category jobs. Because, whenever a call for interview comes, parents of poor people run from pillar to post, looking for 'sifarish' (recommendation) and 'jack' (help). And perhaps this is the reason for corruption at lower levels. I am happy that, in such a short span of 15 days, the government has moved very fast.”

He had hinted at initiating such a move in his the Independence Day speech this year, when he had said the youths should be appointed directly on the basis of their scores.
