Mumbai: As Tahawwur Rana, one of the masterminds of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, was extradited to India, veteran lawyer and prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said that it was completely a "legal procedure".
Nikam, the Mumbai-based lawyer was the Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 terror attacks case.
"This is a completely legal procedure. It is important to see what case is filed against him. I will not talk about it now. I will talk about it after the entire process is over,” Nikam told reporters in Beed district.
After the 26/11, Nikam was appointed as the Social Public Prosecutor for the Mumbai terror attack.
He appeared before then Judge ML Tahaliyani (Retd), who as Additional Sessions Judge conducted the trial of the case in which Pakistani fidayeen Mohammed Ajmal Kasab was convicted and awarded capital punishment. However, two others Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Shaikh, both Indians, were acquitted.
Later Nikam appeared before Justice GA Sanap, then Additional Sessions Judge, and represented the state in the case involving another accused Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal, the trial of which is still underway. He also conducted the examination in chief of David Coleman Headley, who appeared before the court from the United States via video-conferencing.
