Srinagar: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday called for national unity to decisively combat terrorism, while condemning the harassment of Kashmiris outside the Valley in the wake of recent terror attacks.
Gandhi, who arrived in Srinagar today, amid rising tensions following the deadly Pahalgam attack, stressed the importance of standing together as a nation, cutting across political and regional divides.
“It's important that as a nation we stand united and defeat terrorism once and for all. This is not the time for division but for solidarity,” he said.
The senior Congress leader also expressed deep concern over reports of Kashmiris being targeted in various parts of the country. “It is sad to see that some people are attacking my brothers and sisters from Kashmir in the rest of the country,” he said.
The Rae Bareli MP also called on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to discuss the situation and offered full support to the Union Territory’s leadership in the wake of the tragic event.
“We're ready to support whatever action the government wishes to take,” he stated.
Gandhi also met with various local groups, including traders, student leaders, and tourism industry representatives, to assess the broader impact of the attack on the region.
In a post on X, Gandhi said, “This is a terrible tragedy. I have come here to understand the situation and help. All the people of Jammu and Kashmir have condemned this horrific attack and have fully supported the country. I met an injured person. My condolences and affection are with those who have lost their loved ones. I want to assure everyone that the whole country stands united with them.”
