Srinagar: On the eve of the Republic Day celebrations, security arrangements across Jammu and Kashmir were ramped up on Saturday to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the event.
Authorities have implemented a comprehensive range of security arrangements, including intensified frisking, increased checkpoints, and aerial surveillance across the Union Territory (UT) to prevent any untoward incidents.
In Srinagar, the security forces, including female police officers and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have ramped up their efforts with rigorous frisking operations. Commuters, both in private cars and on two-wheelers, are being thoroughly checked.
The security push extends beyond the city limits, with reports indicating increased frisking along key routes, including the Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Baramulla national highways.
In addition, both uniformed personnel and plainclothes officers have been deployed near Republic Day function venues to monitor for any suspicious activity.
Jammu has also seen heightened security measures, with extensive checks carried out across various locations in the city. Police and paramilitary forces have conducted random inspections at critical points to maintain a strong security presence.
“Every possible step is being taken to maintain peace and order. Anti-sabotage teams, sniffer dogs, and bomb disposal squads have been deployed at strategic locations. Multi-tier security arrangements have been established at the Maulana Azad Stadium, with strict regulations on entry to ensure the safety of the event,” a senior police officer said.
In Kashmir, Inspector General of Police (IGP) V K Birdi confirmed that a multi-layered security system, including drones and spotters, has been put in place to safeguard the Republic Day functions in the Valley.
“We have made proper and secure arrangements for all those wishing to participate in the celebrations,” Birdi said.
Aerial surveillance is also being carried out in both Srinagar and Jammu, with drone technology being utilised for real-time monitoring to enhance security. A police officer explained, “This adds an extra layer of vigilance to the already stringent arrangements in place.”
To facilitate smooth movement and public participation, certain roads around key event venues in both Jammu and Srinagar have been temporarily closed. Authorities have advised the public to cooperate with security protocols, including routine checks and restricted access to some areas.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is scheduled to hoist the national flag and take the salute in Jammu while Deputy Chief Minister Surender Choudhary, is slated to lead the celebrations in Srinagar.
