A 23-year-old Jawaharlal Nehru University student was arrested on charges of sexual assault on a woman classmate, police on Sunday said.

According to the Delhi Police, both the complainant and the accused are post-graduate students of the university’s Centre for Historical Studies.

The incident took place in December 2015, when the accused and the complainant went to a friend’s rented house for a party and he forced himself on her, a senior Delhi Police official said.

However, the woman approached the police and reported the matter on May 17. A case under IPC Section 376 (rape) was registered against the accused, the official said.

According to Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani’s submission in Lok Sabha last year, 25 cases of sexual harassment were reported from JNU in 2013-14, the highest among all educational institutions.
