Hassan: A labourer from Tamil Nadu was killed and four others sustained injuries when mounds of soil and boulders caved in on them at a granite quarry in Dhumagere village, Hassan taluk, on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Mani (40). The injured are Nelson, Yelumalai, Siddaraju and Madurai, all from Tamil Nadu, who have been admitted to a private hospital in Hassan.

The incident occurred when explosives were used to blast the rock at Green Granite quarry belonging to Navyashree Minerals.

The severely injured Mani was being shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for treatment, when he died en route.

It is said that the body was secretly shifted to his native village in Tamil Nadu. Learning about this, Shantigrama Police rushed to Tamil Nadu and stopped the last rites of Mani. The body has been sent to post mortem.

Cases have been filed against quarry owner Devaraj, his son Arjun, Sridhar Babu, Krishnamurthy and quarry incharge Prakash. Shantigrama Police have taken into custody Devaraj and Prakash for inquiry.
