Ten people have been arrested and prohibitory orders imposed in the City on Saturday, following a clash between two communities during the Tipu Sultan Jayanthi procession.
The police had to resort to mild lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Several people who were injured in the incident have been admitted to a hospital. Two private buses and a few autorickshaws were damaged in the incident.
The Tipu Sultan Abhimanigala Vedike, which had organised the procession, decided to take out the procession from Kanaka Circle to old Madhyamika School.
Trouble started when the procession reached the statue of Sangolli Rayanna on Holalkere Road.
A group that was witness to the procession raised objections when members climbed on to the pedestal of Sangolli Rayanna’s statue and started dancing with footwear on.
An argument ensued between the two groups and a few miscreants tore flexes that adorned the road. Police tried to pacify members of the two groups. As the procession moved on, a few trouble-makers tore banners of the Tipu Jayanthi, which led to a stone-throwing incident between the two groups.
The situation went beyond control as the two groups clashed near SJM Dental College. The police were again forced to resort to lathicharge, which made the miscreants go berserk.
Following the incident, violence also broke out in Velenagar, Santhe Maidan, Burujanahatti and other places in the City. The City limped back to normalcy by evening.
