As many as 1,235 Indian cyclists snatched a Guinness World Record from neighbouring Bangladesh by peddling four km in a single lane here on Saturday.
The event was organised by the Hubballi Bicycle Club as part of Republic Day celebrations. The cyclists set aside the record created by Bangladesh in 2016, where 1,186 cyclists had peddled for 3.2 km in a single lane. The Indian cyclists achieved the feat in their second attempt.
The event aimed to spread the message, ‘respect cyclists,’ and to create awareness regarding the benefits of cycling on one's personal health and also about the minimum carbon footprint left by cyclists.
The first attempt was made at 2.15 pm,# when nearly 1,500 cyclists made an attempt to pedal the four-km stretch. However, they were disqualified due to the gap between bicycles and other issues. In the second attempt, the 1,235 cyclists rode from Oxford College (on the outskirts of Hubballi city) to Kusgal in a single lane and it was declared as a record by adjudicator Swapnil.
Cyclists from Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Goa and other parts of the country had participated in the event.
