A total of 178 primary and high schools in Dakshina Kannada district do not have compound walls around the school.
A proposal has been sent to the Central government to approve an estimate for the same. The estimate is likely to be okayed during the academic year. Speaking to Deccan Herald, SSA District Project Coordinator Shivaprakash said that during the last academic year, 33,200 metre compound wall was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5.58 crore. Accordingly, 405 primary schools could get compound walls either fully or partially. “At present, 87 primary schools and 91 high schools are yet to get compound walls.
In fact, we have already issued a circular to all the schools which do not have compound walls to lay bio-fences utilising the services of labourers under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Under bio-fence, suitable type of shrubs that doubles up as compound walls can be taken up,” he said.
No ‘Jilla Darshana’
The project coordinator said that ‘jilla darshana’ and ‘krishi darshana’ which aimed at taking kids from BPL families to a tour in different tourist destinations in the district and taking children to paddy fields to create awareness on farming activities, will not be taken up this academic year. “Funds have not been released this year, for the purpose,” he added.
Uniforms
The government schools for the first time this year are given two sets of uniforms to students. All schools in the district have received the materials for the second set of uniform. Students find it tough to wear a clean uniform all six days with one set, and two sets would help them wear fresh uniforms on alternative days, he said.
A total of 1,06,245 students will be benefited from the second set of uniforms in the district.
The government has already released a grant of Rs 2,12,49,000 for the purpose. The money has already been given to each schools. The schools have been asked either to purchase materials or purchase the uniform set from national agency identified by the government to supply uniforms last year.
Accordingly, all the beneficiaries will get the uniforms by month end. The process of supplying uniforms in Mangalore North and Puttur Education Block has already been completed, he added.
