Udupi: A case of online fraud has been registered at the Udupi Town Police Station after a 23-year-old youth was allegedly cheated of Rs 55,000 while attempting to purchase a computer graphic card online.
According to the complaint, the victim, Anirudh Rao (23) from Ambalapady in Udupi taluk, came across an advertisement titled “Cheapest PC Parts in India by Kryptonix Gamiy” on a Facebook group. After clicking on the advertisement, he placed an online order for a graphic card.
Subsequently, an unknown person contacted him through WhatsApp and asked him to transfer the payment for the graphic card. Acting on this, Anirudh Rao transferred Rs 55,000 via UPI to an account on December 17.
However, even after receiving the payment, the accused neither delivered the graphic card nor refunded the amount, thereby cheating the complainant online.
Based on the complaint, Udupi Town Police have registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, and further investigation is underway.
