Udupi: A police team from Udupi district arrested three persons in connection with a chain snatching case by assaulting a 70-year-old woman.
The arrested are Gourish Rohidas Kerkar (37), Mainuddin Bagalkot (31) and Surjeet Gautam Kar (27).
The trio were arrested from Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district.
The victim Padma (70) from Varamballi village, in Brahmavar had lodged a complaint against assault and snatching of her gold chain (karimani) .
On the morning of April 26, while she was plucking flowers outside her house on the concrete road, a white car approached her.
One accused, wearing a saffron-coloured T-shirt, got down from the car, while two to three others stayed in the vehicle and moved a short distance toward Doopadakatte, parking by the roadside.
While the complainant was plucking flowers with her back turned, she heard a noise and turned around, at which point the accused who had alighted first came close to her and pushed her on the back of the head. She fell onto the road.
He allegedly grabbed her hand, dragged her along the road, assaulted her on the face, and snatched a gold chain (karimani) weighing approximately 40 grams and valued at around Rs 2.5 lakh. After committing the crime, the accused fled from the spot in the car.
Due to the assault, the complainant suffered bleeding injuries on her upper lip and under her right eye, along with pain from the blow to the back of her head. Based on her complaint, a case was registered at Brahmavar Police Station under sections 309(4), 115(2) of BNS.
Following the complaint, a special team was constituted for the arrest of the accused and recovery of stolen property. The team was led by Gopikrishna KR, CPI Brahmavar. With the cooperation of police personnel from Uttara Kannada district, they were arrested in Yellapur. The police have also seized the car worth Rs 10 lakh that was used for the crime.
The arrest has been produced to the court.
