Four people were killed when a speeding ambulance hit the Shiroor toll gate in Byndoor police station limits in Karnataka's Udupi district on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as Gajanana, Lokesh, Manjunath and Jyoti. All of the deceased were in the ambulance.

Byndoor PSI informed DH that there were eight persons in the ambulance, including the driver. The ambulance was travelling from Honnavar to Udupi with a patient, Gajanana. The patient was undergoing treatment at Sridevi Hospital in Honnavar and was later referred to a hospital in Udupi.

While the toll gate employees were removing the plastic caution boards kept as barriers that were blocking the path, the speeding vehicle lost control and crashed into the toll gate plaza.
All the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment.

While one of the injured is critical, three have sustained serious injuries, including a toll gate staff Shambhaji Gorpade.

The driver of the ambulance, Roshan Rodrigues, has escaped miraculously.

Byndoor police have visited the spot and the investigation is in progress.
