As many as 44 undertrials facing trial in different cases in Mangaluru district jail were admitted to district Wenlock hospital after falling sick due to suspected food poisoning on Wednesday.

"Undertrials after consuming beaten rice begun complaining of intense stomach ache. Some undertrials fainted after repeated bouts of vomiting and were shifted to Wenlock hospital. However all undertrials had responded to the treatment and are recovering, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr H R Thimmaiah said.

The district jail is crammed with as many as 349 undertrials. 44 among them fell sick after consuming beaten rice. Food and water samples collected from the kitchen had been sent to laboratory for ascertaining the causes of food poisoning.

Meanwhile Taluk health officer, three doctors among others had visited the district jail to carry-out indepth investgation, DHO said.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal visited the hospital and said a probe will be conducted into the incident of food poisoning.
