Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City police have booked 489 cases against buses for violations under the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act in a special drive taken up last week. The police have already booked a total of 1527 cases under the IMV Act during the year.

Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal said that in an effort to prevent road accidents and maintain traffic discipline in Mangaluru city, numerous awareness programmes have been conducted to educate the public, students, bus drivers/owners, and auto-rickshaw drivers/owners about adhering to traffic rules.

Additionally, private bus owners operating in the city have been regularly summoned for meetings and discussions, during which appropriate instructions were given to ensure their drivers follow traffic regulations.

Despite these measures, it is disheartening to note that during a special drive conducted last week, traffic rules were violated and 489 cases have been booked.

The commissioner warned of booking cases under Section 281 of BNS act for traffic violations by buses and filing an FIR and submitting it to the court.

He urged the private bus drivers, conductors and owners to focus on road safety and traffic rules and follow the lane discipline.

Of the 489 cases booked in one week, the highest was pertaining to carrying excess passengers (234 cases) followed by footboard travelling (71 cases), use of shrill horns (62 cases), obstruction traffic (59 cases), violating lane discipline (20 cases), not issuing tickets (18 cases), reckless driving (14 cases) and others.

While in the year 2025 till date, 643 cases for carrying excess passengers have been booked followed by obstructing traffic (316), shrill horns (163), footboard travelling (138), not issuing tickets (68), violating lane discipline (68), reckless driving (30), without uniform (25), violating no entry/ one way rule (24) and others.
