Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka said on Wednesday that the Congress government in the state had utilised the 60 per cent commission taken from contractors for the ‘Gandhi Bharata’ programme that was organised in Belagavi.

Addressing a press conference here, he said law and order had collapsed in the state and that Congress legislators were themselves complaining that development had come to a standstill in their constituencies.

The Congress had made a pre-poll promise that it would implement the guarantee schemes without imposing a burden on the people.

But the party’s government did not keep its word and has increased stamp duty, prices of milk, water, electricity, bus fares, besides hiking the taxes on petrol, diesel and liquor. The government is planning to hike milk prices again, he said.

“Government loans are increasing, which is bound to have a negative effect on the people. The Congress government is in a state of coma and there is a tussle going on in the ruling party for the post of chief minister,” Ashoka said.

People are waiting to see the back of this government, he said. “The home minister is missing in action even as incidents of murder, bank robberies, rape and mutilation of cows have become the order of the day,” the leader of the Opposition said.
