Around 80 people were injured, two of them seriously, when an engine hit the stationary Hubli-Arsikere passenger train at the Chikkajajur station in Chitradurga district on Tuesday night.

There was a huge noise in the five rear bogies of the train, when it was hit by the speeding engine from behind at 8.40 pm. Those seated fell over each other, resulting in the injuries. The two seriously injured passengers have been admitted to the Chikkajajur hospital.

Railway sources have alleged that the incident occurred due to the negligence on the part of the station master, who gave the green signal for the spare engine to travel on the same track where the passenger train had arrived from Hubli, just a few minutes ago.
