They opposed the State government’s decision to allot more seats in both engineering and medical courses to private colleges and sudden hike in fees.
The students wanted the government to revoke its decision in the interest of lakhs of students. They raised anti-government slogans for succumbing to the pressure of private colleges lobby.
Conceding 10 per cent additional seats in engineering and two per cent in medical course to private colleges would hit poor and meritorious students. Hiking fees by Rs 5,000 was unaffordable for poor students. The Government must allot seats and fix the fees on the basis of social justice. They alleged that the government kept academicians and students in dark before taking such major decisions.
Earlier, the protest march started from the Hemavathy Circle and culminated at the deputy commissioner’s office where they submitted a memorandum. Traffic was thrown out of gear for some time as they formed a human chain at the busy N R Circle.
