Mysuru: After the shocking incident of slashing udders of cows in Bengaluru created tensions, miscreants have chopped the tail of a two-year-old male stray calf in Nanjangud in Mysuru district with a lethal weapon, which strayed near Halladakeri on Thursday morning.

The calf was found wounded near the famous Sri Srikanteshwara temple of Nanjangud.

Mysuru district SP N Vishnuvardhana said Nanjangud police received information about the incident around 9.30 am on Thursday morning and when they visited, the wound was still fresh and the calf was bleeding. They calf was shifted to the veterinary hospital at Nanjangud for treatment, later, he said. 

He added that Nanjangud town police have registered a suo moto case under the cruelty to animals act along with other BNS sections. They have formed two teams led by Nanjangud DySP Raghu to probe. The miscreants are yet to be identified. Police is also CCTV footage to identify the miscreants.

The locals protested and urged the administration to arrange a cattle care centre/shelter for cows given to the temple by devotees to fulfill their offers (Harake) to Lord. 

Temple EO Jagadish informed that they are taking care of the injured cow at Kalamandira of the temple as it needs six days treatment.

He added that so far no devotees have formally handed over the cows to the temple and obtained receipts. There are over 12 such cows left around the temple and most are male cows.

The calf is said to be left by a devotee around the temple to fulfill a vow (Harake) to the Lord.

A temporary shelter has been arranged for the cows at the elephant shed of the temple. He urged the devotees to formally hand over cows to the temple.
