For the last 20 days, there are neither renditions, nor riyaz, but only a pall of gloom. For, Gudi is bed-ridden with a liver condition.

Born into a humble family, Gudi has risen to be one of the greatest exponents of Kirana Gharana.

His style of rendition is unique and his alaaps unvarying. His taans are versatile, spontaneous and effusive, and he has excellent control over his breath. No wonder, Joshi had chosen him as his disciple.

For his guru, Madhav Gudi was ‘Madhu.’ Madhu is yet to come to terms with the death of his guru. According to his family members, he keeps recollecting the days he spent with Joshi and keeps chanting his name. He is unable to come out of the trauma, they say.

‘Missing guruji’

“My guruji is no more. How can I live without him? With whom shall I share my grief?” asks a tearful Gudi.

His son Prasanna says: “After a check-up at the Jupiter Hospital in Mumbai, my father was diagnosed with holes in the liver. The doctors have said the problem can be treated with medicine. At present, Dr Ajit Joshi from Hubli is attending to him.”

With the family finding it difficult to meet the cost of his treatment, Gudi’s followers have come forward to bear the expenses.
