Alupotsav: Flower show draws crowd

The flower show organised by Horticulture department as a part of Alupotsav at Barkur attracted a lot of people. A variety of exhibits made using flowers, millets and vegetables were a centre of attraction.

Flowers like Roses (brought from Pune and Bengaluru), Carnation, Marigold, Chrysanthemum, Golden Aster, Orchids, Gerbera and Lillies were used for the preparing models of elephant, butterflies and others.

The emblem of Alupa rulers (Barkur) was another attraction and was made from flowers. The 12-ft tall emblem was prepared using around 5,000 marigold and chrysanthemum and 2,400 Carnation flowers.

An exhibit of Lord Krishna guarding a cattle, made using the millets, was also on display. As many as 1,800 roses and lillies were used to make the model of elephant and 1,000 flowers were used for butterfly.

More than 50 varieties of vegetables including mushrooms, tubers and a variety of arecanuts were also displayed.

A seminar on Alupa rulers was held at Shreemathi Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National Government First Grade College in Barkur on Sunday. A Yakshagana by well known artistes Maadaiva Mahisandaya, was also staged.

After the procession of Sri Someshwara Swamy, a Ganga Arathi was held at Moodukeri Pushkarani (stepwell).

Further, musical programmes, Yakshagana-Vaibhava Jugalbandhi, ‘Bhava Beladingala Geetha Gayana’ (song programme) and a dance ballet on the lost glory of Alupa-Barkur were also held.
