Bengaluru: Leaders across the political spectrum condoled the death of veteran Congressman Shamanur Shivashankarappa (94).

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said: “I am pained by the demise of former minister, MLA, All India Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha President and senior party leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa.”

Siddaramaiah recalled that Shamanur was away from controversy in his long political career and described him as a leader who dedicated life for people’s welfare.

“The works of Shivashankarappa, which made Davangere a model district, will make him immortal in public memory. I pray for the peace of the departed soul and I pray to God that his son S S Mallikarjun and his family get the strength to bear this loss,” the chief minister added.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed his condolences on ‘X’ and described the veteran Congressman as a leader who dedicated his entire life to social service.

Expressing his condolences on X, former chief minister B S Yediyurappa recalled Shamanur as an “elder brother” and a senior politician.

He said Shamanur’s death was an irreplaceable loss for Davangere district and the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha.

Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy also expressed his sadness at the veteran’s demise.

In a post on X, he said: “I am deeply pained by the news of the demise of senior politician, former minister, industrialist and gentleman Shamanur Shivashankarappa. He was a leader I personally respected a lot.” Kumaraswamy said that Shamanur was loyal to the Congress party.

Shamanur represented the Davangere South constituency in the current Assembly. His son SS Mallikarjun is the mining minister, while his daughter-in-law Prabha Mallikarjun is the Davangere MP.
