Curtains were down for the 17th edition of ‘Madanda Cup-2013,’ the grand hockey festival of Kodava families that was held for the last 28 days at Kodava Sports and Cultural grounds at Balugodu, on Sunday.
Anjaparavanda team won the Madanda Cup-2013 by defeating hat-trick trophy winning Palanganda team at a tough match that enthralled the audience. The event witnessed a colourful end even amidst the fear of rain which was most likely to spoil the final game and cultural programmes. In the final match, Anjaparavanda team defeated Palanganda team with 2-0 goals. Anjaparavanda team which ruled the game from the beginning, succeeded in defeating the strong opponent team. Palanganda team players drastically failed to convert six penalty corner options into goals. After 12 minutes of the game began, Anjaparavanda team got penalty corner opportunity in which its player Abhin Chittiyappa utilised by converting it as a goal.
Anjaparavanda team which led the game from the beginning, strengthened its hold in the second half too. With its player Roshan Madappa hitting a field goal at the 64th minute, the team emerged victorious. It is for the second time Anjaparavanda team is bagging the trophy. It had won the first trophy in 2008. The winning team was handed over with a trophy and a cash prize of Rs one lakh.
Various awards were given to some of the best players for their performance in this season.
Colourful end
The hockey utsav ended on a colourful note on Sunday. The valedictory programme was marked by music recital by Venkat and team from Pune, followed by body builders show, Kolat by Kodava artistes. The final match was kick started with Hockey Utsav founder Pandanda Kuttappa spinning the silver ball with silver hockey stick. The match which started at 11.30 am, halted for 10 minutes due to a verbal tiff between the two teams.
The situation was brought to control by senior members of both families.
Virajpet MLA K G Bopaiah, MLC M C Nanaiah and other dignitaries viewed the final match.
