A pall of gloom descended on the Sakrebailu elephant camp near here on Saturday, as it lost the second female elephant in a gap of six days.

Kapila, aged around 85, a contemporary of Indira — said to be the state’s oldest elephant that died recently — breathed her last in the camp at around 1.30 pm. She was brought to Sakrebailu from Kakanakote forest area near Mysuru in 1968. She is survived by daughter Amruta and grandson Shiva in the camp. With the death of Kapila, the number of elephants has come down to 21 there. At present, the camp has 12 male elephants and nine female elephants. Veterinarian Vinay told DH that Kapila had stopped taking food and water for the last six days.
