Bengaluru: Unhygienic toilets, overcrowded rooms and poor quality food greeted Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar when he visited the women's government polytechnic hostel in the city on Wednesday.
The minister visited the hostel after inaugurating a new building for the government women's polytechnic and what he saw during his visit upset him.
Expressing his anger, the minister took the official and the warden into task. "Do you construct the toilets at your house the same way using the poor quality materials?" the minister asked. He even directed the officials to reconstruct the hostel toilets in a scientific manner, using good quality materials.
Meanwhile, even students approached the minister with plenty of complaints. They informed the minister about the unavailability of hot water for bathing and poor quality food served etc.. The students also requested the minister to provide non-veg food once a week. Listening to their pleas, Sudhakar directed the officials to ensure that hot water is provided and the quality food is served to inmates.
However, upset with 5 to 7 students staying in each room, the minister announced construction of an additional building for the hostel.
"Government has taken steps to construct 10 hostels across the state in collaboration with Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and the Backward Classes Welfare Department. One of them will be built for the Government Women's Polytechnic students and the rooms will be allotted on twin-sharing basis," Sudhakar added.
