The Karnataka government will soon accept online applications for below-poverty line (BPL) ration cards. Just like passports, people can apply online and the ration card will be delivered on their doorstep.

Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, U T Khader, said that under the online system, ration cards would be issued first and officials would visit the applicant’s house later for verification. Presently, the verification of an applicant’s BPL status is carried out before the card is issued. The online application system and home delivery of BPL cards are aimed at cutting through the red tape, the minister said.
The online system was first introduced for APL cards.
