Mangaluru: Amid various allegations and theories circulating on social media and at various platforms regarding the mob lynching incident at Kudupu and the murder of Suhas Shetty at Kinnipadavu in Bajpe limits, Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy clarified that all arrests in these cases were made based on scientific evidence.

Addressing reporters in Mangaluru, the Commissioner released video footage, audio clips, photographs, and screenshots of provocative social media posts related to the incidents. Referring to the mob lynching of Ashraf on April 27, he said the investigation is progressing in the right direction and is supported by scientific evidence.

He stated that over 30 statements have been recorded in connection with the case. “We are here to protect the people of Mangaluru and will not allow anyone to disrupt law and order. We treat all cases seriously and act based on evidence,” he said.

Reddy noted that at the time of the assault on Ashraf, a cricket match was taking place at the spot, and over 120 individuals had been identified from the scene. Investigators managed to identify and apprehend several suspects by analysing footwear visible in a photo of Ashraf’s body. The image revealed the feet of individuals standing near the victim, and police compared this with shoes worn by people present at the location, helping them track down and arrest multiple accused.

“It is unfortunate that some believe they shouldn’t be summoned to the police station. However, the law treats everyone equally. The police will ensure justice is served and no innocent person is harmed,” he asserted.

Admitting to lapses in police response, the Commissioner acknowledged that a murder case should have been registered immediately after the incident. “The process has begun to initiate action against the officers responsible. No one will be spared,” he assured.

On allegations that the husband of a former corporator was involved but not booked, Reddy said, “It is true he was present at the scene, but there is no evidence that he assaulted Ashraf or provoked the mob.”

Emphasising the integrity of the investigation, he said the police are committed to uncovering the truth. “During the process of investigation, wee are examining the crime itself, any attempts to cover it up, and those who may have harboured the accused. Anyone making claims on social media should present their evidence to the investigating officer or to me. We will investigate any credible information,” he added.

Regarding the murder of Suhas Shetty, which has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Reddy acknowledged that several allegations and theories are circulating. In response, he released video sequences related to the crime. On the presence of burqa-clad women at the scene, he said they were questioned and their statements have been recorded.

Special Action Force

Responding to a query on the recently launched Special Action Force (SAF), Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said personnel are currently undergoing professional training. One team will be sent to Bengaluru next month for further training, while others are being trained at various police stations. When asked about claims that the SAF lacks special powers, he clarified, “the police operate under the law.”
