Dharwad: Additional Superintendent of Police Narayan Baramani of Dharwad district has submitted a request to the Home Department seeking voluntary retirement (VRS).
Baramani confirmed that he had submitted the request a month ago and is currently awaiting a response from the government.
With 31 years of service in the police department, he has four more years remaining before his scheduled retirement.
Incident at Belagavi behind VRS request
According to credible sources, Baramani’s decision to seek VRS stems from an incident involving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during a public event in Belagavi a few months ago.
Baramani, who was on duty at the event, reportedly felt humiliated when the CM, in a moment of visible anger, raised his hand as if to slap him on stage.
The Chief Minister was reacting to protests by BJP activists who waved black flags and shouted slogans against the government. Siddaramaiah, irked by the disturbance, asked who the SP was and summoned Baramani to the dais.
As Baramani approached, the CM made the controversial hand gesture, which drew widespread condemnation from the public, opposition parties, and within police circles, although no formal objections were made at the time.
Baramani is said to have mentioned this incident in his VRS application. Sources added that following his request, both the Chief Minister and the Home Minister had summoned him and urged him to reconsider. However, Baramani stated that he is still waiting for official acceptance of his request and hopes to be relieved from duty soon.
