The ill-fated tanker  fell into a rivulet in Urual Ghat section, 22 kms from Karad, Maharashtra on Thursday. The tanker was carrying Potassium Bromide D-34 which wafted into the rivulet forcing administration to issue alert in surrounding villages.

In a press release, the Deputy Commissioner has directed people to ensure that livestock weren't given river water for drinking and also that swimming and bathing in the river were avoided for at least two days.

People have been asked to use safe water from bore wells, open wells or other sources for drinking.

Water for dilution

Maharashtra has released 2,000 cusecs water from the Koyna dam to dilute the impact of the chemicals in the water after fish kill in the river was reported. Water quality at entry point in the State is being monitored hourly.
