Lakshmeshwar (Gadag dist): The bandh call given by farmers’ organisations demanding that a maize purchase centre be started there,  evoked a good response in the town on Thursday.

Shops and the APMC yard remained closed, while roads wore a deserted look in the town. Hundreds of farmers, accompanied by seers of various mutts, took out a protest march to Shigli Cross in support of their demands, where a dharna was held. 

Police had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent untoward incidents. 

Kannada organisations, ABVP workers and traders took part in the protest march.
