Benefits worth Rs 17.3 lakh given to specially abled

Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) disbursed facilities worth Rs 17.3 lakh to specially abled people on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on MCC premises on Monday.

Prosthetic legs, hearing aids, wheel chairs and medical assistance worth Rs 1.95 lakh were provided to 11 people, under 7.25% reserve funds financial assistance of Rs 9.28 lakh was distributed among 205 people towards surgery, construction of toilets, water connection and LPG connection. Financial assistance worth Rs 5.80 lakh was distributed to people of SC/ST towards construction of houses, house maintenance, self-employment and subsidy for construction of toilets.

MCC Mayor Bhaskar K Moily distributed the facilities to the beneficiaries and urged them to become self-reliant. He said that MCC, in its budget, has reserved Rs 53.30 lakh for the specially abled, ST/ST and economically underprivileged.

MCC Deputy Mayor Muhammed Kunjathbail said that the differently abled should not consider their disability as a curse. Instead, they should develop positive thoughts and draw inspiration from specially abled achievers.

MCC Health and Social Justice Standing Committee chairman Navin D’Souza, corporator Sabitha Misquith, corporator Prakash B Salian, Commissioner Muhammed Nazir, Joint Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak and Community Affairs officer Malini Rodrigues were present on the occasion.
