The incident occurred opposite the Zudio store around 12 pm, on the lane carrying traffic from Nagawara towards Thanisandra. According to the police, the duo – Nigar Sulthan (30) and Nigar Irfana (38) – were on the left side of the lorry and were attempting to overtake another vehicle. The two were housewives.

“There was another two-wheeler in front of the scooter and the women were attempting to overtake it. They accidentally swerved to the right to avoid crashing into the two-wheeler, and came under the wheels of the truck,” said a senior police officer from the Hennur traffic police station.

The two women were killed instantly. Police noted that the two were sisters and residents of Govindapura. The garbage lorry driver, identified as Gadhilinga, 32, a resident of Byrapura, Ballari, was detained. The bodies of the women were shifted to the Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College Hospital.

BBMP garbage lorries have been in the news for all the wrong reasons these past few months. In July last year, two IT professionals were killed in a gruesome crash with a BBMP garbage lorry near KR Circle in central Bengaluru.
