A special court on Friday convicted a man who had eloped with a minor girl and sexually assaulted her in Jagjeevanram Nagar in October 2015.

Police had registered a missing case following a complaint filed by victim’s father accusing his tenant and his 17-year-old daughter. The victim went out to buy grocery and did not return.

Police took up a case and traced the duo. The victim was reunited with her family. A medical examination confirmed she was sexually assaulted.

Based on the girl’s statement, the police filed a case against the accused Akhil and charged him with rape and also under various sections of the POCSO Act.

Police filed a charge-sheet before the court and, after the trial that lasted for three years, it found Akhil guilty of the charges and sentenced him to two years in prison and Rs 5000 fine.
