The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has told the high court that 95% of the garbage in the city has been cleared, while 5% still remains.
The BBMP council further stated that they have beautified several black spots in the city after clearing the garbage. They also told the court that they will ensure that garbage does not pile up in a place for more than 24 hours, while also declaring that they would clear the remaining 5% solid waste by Monday.
A division bench headed by the chief justice was hearing a PIL filed by Narasimha Murthy and others, challenging the installation of a garbage tank by the BBMP close to the compound wall of a temple.
The court, in an earlier hearing, had asked the BBMP commissioner to ensure that the city is garbage free by October 31.
Warning that people littering the streets will have to face the law, the court said the state can use CCTV cameras and the beat police to identify those defacing the city by littering.
It said the city can have a joyful Deepavali when it is garbage-free, while asking the state to take up the issue of garbage in the coordination committee chaired by the chief secretary.
