Ethnic day and Onam celebrations were held at Kristu Jayanti College recently.

Students dressed in their respective ethnic attire as a tribute to their regions, transformed the day into a celebration of unity and diversity. Students had classes in the first two hours after which the programmes officially started off with ‘Chenda Melam’.

Prof Ratheesh, from the department of tourism who was also a part of ‘chenda melam’, said, “‘Chenda Melam’ is one of the traditional orchestra of India where the artistes play ‘chenda’ faultlessly and without compromising on the laid down rules.”

The students also showcased various traditional performances. The programmes conducted included group singing, where a mashup of different vernacular songs were sung by students.

This was followed by ‘Thiruvathira’, a traditional dance from Kerala, which was performed by third year students.

This was followed by the dance of sub-Saharan Africa which was performed by the African community within the college.

The Northeastern students performed their traditional dance ‘Cheraw’, which is a ritual dance performed in Mizoram, consisting of four people holding two crossed pairs of bamboo staves.

Around 200 students did a power-packed flash mob performance which was entertaining.

Father Josekutty P D, principal, said, “As a college which supports various diverse cultures, ‘Ethnic day’ is conducted for the students to showcase their talents through their cultures. From this, both students and the faculty will learn from the different expressions of ethnicity.”

Emin Joe Pious, a second year BBA student, said, “The best thing about the day was that the entire
college was united. This is the time all of us come together as a family, breaking all boundaries of culture and that was truly is a sight to behold.”
