The students’ chapter of The Institution of Engineers (India) was inaugurated at the HKBK College of Engineering recently. The college is the new addition to the list of engineering colleges in the City, which are part of this prestigious forum.
The students’ chapter will facilitate engineering students in presenting their
research paper and getting funds for new projects, among other benefits.
Matthew, a final-year engineering student, said, “Students who become part of this forum, are considered chartered engineers, which is more like an added value. The Indian Institute of Engineers is the only governing body for engineers in the country. In the future, when we start working, everything concerned about engineers will come under them.”
He explained how the forum will function. “As a member of this forum, any complaints related to work and behaviour in office will be dealt by the officials
of The Institution of Engineers,” he said. Once an engineer or a student is found guilty of a mistake, he is directly removed from the forum.
With the launch of this forum, experts from the field and many professors from other colleges will hold seminars every week.
Matthew said, “Topics which will not be taught in classroom or subjects and that are still new in the field, will be introduced in these seminars. Everything related to technology, which cannot be found in books, will be brought before students. This way, being a part of this forum, is extremely helpful to students. Also, it will add value to our resume.”
The overall students’ strength of final-year mechanical engineering course is 100. While 50 students became the members of The Institution of Engineers, the other 50 are the members of the ‘Society of Automotive Engineers’, another forum for engineers.
As part of the inaugural, a seminar on ‘Smart Material and Structures’ was held. Nikhil, another student, said, “This is relatively a new topic and not many of us knew the significance of the subject. The seminar threw light on various aspects of this topic, which really brought a whole new perspective among students.”
The event was inaugurated by Dr Woody P Krishna, chairman, the Institution of Engineers.
