One of the patients, 40-year-old Kalpana, died at M S Ramaiah Hospital on August 17, while 43-year-old Edward David expired at Shifa Hospital on Wednesday. The test results returned positive after their deaths.
Kalpana from Yelahanka was admitted to MS Ramaiah Hospital on August 14. She was diagnosed with lung infection. Her throat swab samples were collected and she was administered Tamiflu on August 16. Kalpana's condition worsened and she died on August 17.
Dr Naresh Shetty, Director, MS Ramaiah Medical Hospital, said the cause for her death was acute respiratory distress syndrome. “We could not have saved her as she got admitted after suffering from fever for five days,” he said. Kalpana had neither pre-existing health complications nor any history of travel or coming into contact with any positive patient.
Edward David, a resident of HBR Layout, apparently had fever, cold and cough for 10 days. He got himself admitted to Shifa Hospital on August 15. Medical Superintendent for A(H1N1) influenza Dr Zameer Ahmed said: “We diagnosed him with A(H1N1) influenza. His throat swab samples were collected and Tamiflu administered to him.” The samples were sent on August 15 and results arrived on August 19. Edward had been suffering from diabetes.
