Two armed men tried to rob an ATM kiosk near Bhadrappa Junction under Kodigehalli police limits in the wee hours of Tuesday.

This was the second ATM burglary attempt in the last 48 hours. The police say that the kiosk did not have the mandatory burglar alarm.

Around 1 am, two persons entered the State Bank of India ATM kiosk and pretended to withdraw money. The security guard at the kiosk, Devaraj, 35, mistook them for customers. They threatened him with an iron rod and knife, said the police.

They tried to dismantle the lower part of the ATM machine, where the cash is loaded. Unable to dismantle the machine, they left when they noticed a few passersby on the road. They fled the spot on a bike, said the police. The two were wearing monkey caps and their movements inside the kiosk were recorded on the CCTV camera. But their faces could not be recognised. The police are examining the CCTV footage.

A senior police officer said that the ATM kiosk did not have a burglar alarm. The ICICI bank ATM kiosk on Doddaballapur Road in Yelahanka–where another burglary attempt was made on Sunday morning–too did not have a burglar alarm, he said.

“This shows that these banks are not serious about security measures. The matter is being discussed with senior police officers and a stern warning will be sent to the banks to install all the security measures at the earliest,” he said.

A case has been registered.
